Choose layers for a knit dress
Pay attention to fabric friction and sleeve room as well as the outline in the mirror.

A knit dress can be easy to wear until another layer pulls at its sleeves or catches against its surface. Start by considering the dress's thickness and fit. A fine, close-fitting knit behaves differently beneath a jacket from a chunky, loose dress.
Try the dress with the underwear or slip you intend to use, following any garment guidance. Check it in daylight and while sitting. If the fabric clings or becomes more transparent under tension, adding a coat will not resolve the issue once the coat comes off.
Give sleeves enough room
Pull the chosen outer layer on and move your arms. A narrow jacket sleeve can bunch a knitted sleeve at the elbow, making the combination uncomfortable. More generous armholes or a smoother lining may work better, but assess the actual garments together rather than judging their labels.
For a light knit dress, a cardigan can add warmth without much structure. If both pieces are loose and textured, consider whether you enjoy that softness or would prefer a clearer outer shape. A coat with more definition can provide contrast, while a long cardigan may continue the relaxed line.
Check the hems in motion
A short jacket shows more of the dress, while a longer coat changes the overall silhouette. Neither needs to end at an exact prescribed point. Walk, turn and sit to see whether the layers catch on each other or create an awkward cluster of fabric.
Choose footwear in relation to the dress's hem and your activities. Boots can offer one visual line, while flats or trainers create another. Check any visible gap and the way the dress moves around the shoes. A long hem should not become a trip point.
A belt can define the waist if the dress supports it comfortably, but it may also make a loose knit bunch or change the hem height. Test it for more than a moment. Follow the care label for washing, drying and storage; do not assume every knitted dress should be treated like the same jumper.
Keep the final outfit manageable. If the dress, cardigan, scarf and coat all need frequent adjustment, remove one element or choose a smoother combination. Layering should help the dress work for the day, not turn it into a collection of competing textures.
