Present flowers so the recipient can enjoy them

Think about the recipient's home and the handover as well as the bouquet.

Flowers are easiest to enjoy when they arrive at a suitable time, in a manageable quantity and with clear care information. Before choosing a bouquet, consider the recipient's preferences, available space and household. Strong fragrance, pollen, children or animals may affect what is appropriate.

Tell the florist about relevant requirements and check the suitability of the actual plants, not just the bouquet's colour. For households with pets, consult authoritative plant-safety information and do not assume that placing flowers on a high shelf removes every risk. If suitability is uncertain, choose a different kind of gift.

Match the presentation to the occasion

A loose bouquet handed to a busy dinner host creates an immediate search for a vase. An agreed delivery at a quieter time or an arrangement that can be set down appropriately may be more convenient. Consider weight, stability and transport rather than selecting only for the photograph.

If bringing your own vase, make clear whether it is part of the gift. Choose one that suits the stems and is easy to place, without requiring the recipient to accommodate a large permanent object. Keep water contained during transport and protect nearby belongings.

Leave useful information with the flowers

Include the florist's care instructions and any flower-food directions. Do not replace them with a universal household remedy. The recipient should be able to identify the flowers and understand how the arrangement is intended to be maintained.

For a delivery, confirm the address and when someone can receive it. Do not assume that leaving flowers outside in heat, cold or poor weather is harmless. Follow the supplier's current delivery arrangements and make any important access information clear.

Keep the card personal and brief. A sentence explaining what you are celebrating or appreciating can carry more meaning than a generic message selected at checkout. Check the name and spelling before sending.

Allow the recipient to arrange the flowers in their own way. A gift does not require them to preserve the florist's exact composition or display it in the room you imagined. The aim is to offer something they can enjoy within their home, not a temporary decorating instruction.
