Layer a knit vest without adding bulk everywhere
Check the armholes and neckline against the shirt or tee beneath it.

A knit vest adds warmth and texture through the body while leaving the arms less covered. Its usefulness depends on how it meets the underlayer. A vest that looks neat alone may pull a shirt into folds or expose a neckline that feels unresolved.
Start with the armholes
Try the vest over the actual shirt or top you plan to use. Raise and lower your arms, then check whether fabric gathers beneath the armholes. A bulky sleeve head can be difficult under a close vest, while a very wide armhole may reveal more of the underlayer than expected. Neither is automatically wrong, but the relationship should be comfortable.
A fine tee can create a simple base. A collared shirt adds visible detail at the neck, sleeves and hem, so decide which of those areas you want to show. If every edge projects by only a tiny amount, the outfit may look accidental; a clearer length difference can be easier to read.
Choose the neckline pairing
A V-neck vest frames a collar or a higher underlayer differently from a crew neck. Try the collar both inside and outside the opening if the garment allows it, and choose the version that sits without constant adjustment. Avoid forcing a stiff collar into a narrow neckline.
A patterned vest already supplies a strong element. Plain trousers and a quieter shirt can give it space. With a plain vest, texture or a subtle stripe beneath may be enough interest without additional accessories.
Keep the lower half clear
Check the vest's hem against the waistband. A shorter version can sit above a loose shirt hem, while a longer one may cover it. Tucking a thick vest can become uncomfortable, so do not assume every layered outfit needs a visible waist.
Try the outer coat too. Although the vest has no sleeves, the combined body layers still occupy room. A smooth underlayer may make the whole combination easier to wear.
Follow each garment's care guidance separately. The vest and shirt may not share the same washing requirements. If you enjoy the finished outfit, note the specific pairing rather than assuming the vest will work over every top. Successful layering often comes from compatible shapes, not simply adding a knit to an existing outfit.
