Combine cushions through colour and texture

Start with the seat and the room's existing colours, then choose a small number of useful cushions.

Neutral cushions with different textures on a sofa.

Cushions are an easy way to alter a room, but their usefulness depends on the seat beneath them. A shallow sofa can become uncomfortable under a row of large cushions, while a deep chair may genuinely benefit from back support. Establish how many the seating can comfortably hold before deciding on patterns.

Choose a connecting colour

Look for a colour already present in the room, perhaps in a rug, artwork or curtain. It does not need to be the dominant shade. Repeating a smaller accent can connect the cushions to the room without making everything match. Compare fabric samples in the room's daylight and evening light; a colour that looks warm in a shop can appear quite different beside your sofa.

Mix pattern scales if you enjoy patterned textiles. A broad stripe and a small irregular print can be easier to distinguish than several patterns of similar size competing for attention. Include a quieter surface where the combination needs a pause. The precise number is less important than whether each cushion contributes something visible.

Let texture create variation

A woven, smooth or softly textured fabric can distinguish cushions that share a colour family. This is especially useful in a neutral room. Feel the material as well as looking at it: a decorative surface that scratches against an arm or catches on clothing may not suit an everyday seat.

Check covers, fastenings and care labels before buying. Removable does not automatically mean machine-washable. If the sofa is used with food, pets or children, choose fabrics whose actual maintenance fits the household rather than relying on a vague description such as easy care.

Try the arrangement with someone sitting down. If most cushions immediately go onto the floor, reduce their number or give the extras a convenient place. Different sizes can work, but the largest should not force the sitter forward unless that support is welcome.

Photograph the room from its usual entrance and remove one cushion before adding another. Sometimes a crowded combination needs fewer elements, not an extra linking colour. Keep spare covers folded away if you like occasional changes. You can alter the room's emphasis without accumulating another complete set of cushions each season.
