Keep a coffee table usable as well as styled

Leave a clear landing place for everyday objects and make the decorative group easy to move.

A coffee table often appears in photographs as a surface for books, candles and a vase. In use, it may need to hold drinks, a board game, a snack or someone's laptop. Decide which activities matter in your room and reserve space for them before arranging decorative objects.

Test reach from each seat

Sit on the sofa and any nearby chair. Check whether the table can be reached comfortably without an awkward lean. Its height and distance matter more than whether it is precisely centred on a rug. Also test the route around it: a large table can become an obstacle even when it is convenient from the main sofa.

Place the items commonly used during an evening on the empty surface. This reveals how much clear space is needed. A large book stack may look attractive but leave nowhere for a mug without putting it on a cover. Books intended to be browsed should be accessible, not structural supports for several fragile objects.

Contain one small arrangement

A tray can gather a few decorative pieces and make them removable when the table is needed. Keep the tray light enough to lift safely and give it somewhere else to go. A tray that nearly covers the whole table does not create flexibility; it simply turns the display into one larger object.

Choose stable objects and consider the household. Fragile vessels, trailing foliage or open flames may be unsuitable for a table frequently used by children or pets. There is no requirement to include a candle. A bowl, a book or no decoration at all can be appropriate.

Check the table's care instructions and use suitable protection for heat or moisture. Do not assume a stone appearance means the surface is impervious to marks, or that every wood finish tolerates the same cleaning method.

Keep hidden storage accountable

A lower shelf or drawer can hold remotes and games, but give it defined contents. Otherwise the clear top is achieved by moving clutter one level down. Leave enough access to retrieve items without crouching around a heavy display.

At the end of an ordinary evening, the table should be easy to reset in a few movements. If it takes a careful reconstruction, simplify the arrangement. A table with open space is ready for people to use it; that readiness can be part of its appearance rather than something decoration has to conceal.
