Decorate a small birthday table
Use the centre of a compact table carefully so that guests can still eat and talk.

A small birthday table has limited room for plates, drinks, serving dishes and decoration. Begin with the place settings and food, then use the space that remains. Planning the decorations first often produces a table that looks complete until the guests need somewhere to put their glasses.
Choose one visual idea rather than several competing themes. A repeated colour, a patterned napkin or a small arrangement near the cake can be enough. Use items already on hand where they suit the plan, and avoid buying a full set of themed tableware for a short meal.
Test the table while seated
Put out a real place setting and sit down. Check elbow room, the position of glasses and whether a decoration blocks the person opposite. A low arrangement is usually easier to work around than several tall objects, but its width matters too.
Keep serving dishes off the table if they consume the space needed for eating. A nearby surface can hold food where it is safe and convenient to serve. Make sure the route does not require guests to squeeze behind chairs or reach over decorations.
Give the birthday detail a focal point
A cake can provide the main celebratory element without additional centrepieces. If the cake arrives later, use the space for serving until then. A card at the birthday person's place or a single ribbon around a napkin can carry the theme in the meantime.
Avoid loose glitter or small decorative pieces near food. Consider the ages of guests and any pets when choosing materials. If candles are used, follow suitable fire-safety precautions and never let the arrangement bring flame close to paper, fabric or other flammable decoration; battery-operated alternatives may simplify the setting.
Keep the colours connected rather than identical. Plain plates can work with patterned napkins if one colour repeats. The table does not need to imitate a hired event setup to feel considered.
Before guests arrive, remove one item if the surface still feels crowded. The most successful decoration is the part that remains pleasant during the meal, not merely in the photograph taken beforehand. People, food and conversation will fill the table soon enough.
